What is Dowry??

Dowry is the wealth a bride brings to her husband at the time of marriage. Sometimes compelled to get even after marriage. It may be in the form of cash, jewelry, properties...Anything worth for the groom's family...

India and Dowry...

India has the history of these illegal practices over the centuries. One form or another, this system has been practiced. Differences are there in the way it’s practiced. It depends upon the society, caste, religion and economic conditions. The practice of Dowry has been made illegal from 1961. But still it persists, like a virus with its root buried deep into the heart of the people. Extreme form of Dowry problems results in "Dowry Death".

Who's cooking...?

The dowry is the main factor during a marriage. This starts soon after the groom or bride gives green signal that they can be a couple. Here starts the business, a business between the bride's parents and groom's parents where the groom’s family plays with White (chess).

It will be like an auction site. A common scenario...
(Usually groom's mother (i.e.) the main villain... will start the proceeding)

Main Characters: GM - Groom's Mother, BF - Bride's Father

GM: lets start the main course... we have spent so and so for our son through out his life. We spent so and so for his studies, clothes, toothbrushes...all blah blah blah...so we are expecting some 80lakhs(son is a software guy) cash, 2kg gold, a car, all household things(because they don’t have any) and whatever you want to give for your daughter such that she will always be happy..

BF :( in complete shock)... madam. But we are not that much rich. am a government servant only. my hands are clean...Iwont take bribe also. can you pls reduce all these..I will give whatever I can...

GM : what ridiculous it is..you know how much I have spent for my sons engineering..(son studied thro. some donation)..I will strict to it...I cant reduce..

(poor bride and groom will be sitting in the corner(opposite corners) thinking about their marriage,the children, which school, which college..and ultimately how much dowry for them :-)) (MAC3 speed) )

BF : But madam.. I have only 2 lakhs cash with me.. I have applied for loan for 3 lakhs more..with which I have to arrange the marriage. I have 250 grms of gold ... thats all I can do madam..

GM : what..ok you call us when you have all those I have asked..till then bye.. de son..come on..lets go..this case wont work out for us..lets go to the next house..

(Son, very obediently stands up and goes behind his mom..at the entrance..turns back..grins and vanishes..

End of story..

This is a very common scenario in India..

Consequences..

If the groom fails to bring whatever the groom's family wanted.. the fight starts..everyday there will be fight..Extreme form...death..either suicide or murder...
The financial drain of dowry is an important reasons why Indian parents prefer male offspring to female..this leads to one more horrible crime..female infanticide...
In Indian home.. a daughter is considered to be another's property..raised in parental home and gifted away. But a son is an asset who will bring wealth thro. dowry.

Some Factors..

Some factors why this system is followed are..social factors,religious factors,economic factors..The economic factor is insteresting one..In families where there are one son and a daughter...they always marry the daughter first...as they will recoup those things when they marry off their sons..either by demanding a dowry equal or in most cases more than what they spent..

The First Sin of the Indian society can be eradicated only by YOU AND ME..

We have to start...our generation atleast...we have to put the FULL STOP...

GUYS - dont listen to ur parents atleast in this topic...do what you think is right...are we guys so dumb and useless,such that we cant keep our wifes with our own money... do we need their own money to feed them(most of the cases,feed ourselves)..cant we give them a better life with our money... WE CAN !! WE CAN !! its not in the money its in the mind..
